What if I spill a drink on my keyboard..

Don't throw out that coffee-soaked keyboard just yet. A desktop computer's keyboard will usually survive a coffee or beer spill.

Turn the keyboard upside down on top of a kitchen towel and leave it alone for a while. Then you can wipe the top of the keys down with a slightly damp cloth and be back in business.

You can try the same drill with a laptop's keyboard, but it may not fare as well because critical parts live beneath the keyboard and some liquid may ooze down.

And beware, spills typically void a laptop's warranty, so some owners may find it worth the money to buy an extended warranty or accidental damage coverage that specifically covers drops and spills. Get it from the manufacturer who sold your equipment to you.
Better yet, put the keyboard upside down on the top shelf of the dishwasher and wash it. This works like a charm. I first read about this in either a newspaper or online, but we have used this method for a number of keyboards and works great. Turn it upside down on the towels for a few days until you are 100% sure everything is dry. Not for laptops!!! (And don't wash the dishes at the same time, and only use a tiny amount of dishwashing powder.)

client=firefox-a » The Magical Firefox String That Brings Millions for Mozilla Foundation

The Magical Firefox String That Brings Millions for Mozilla Foundation
There's huge money in free and open source software as Mozilla proves it yet again.

Mozilla, developers of Firefox browser, generated a revenue of $53 million in the year 2005 mostly from "search engine relationships". [Jason Calacanis' estimates were close enough.]

Now it doesn't take rocket science to assume that most of this money flew in from Google as it is the default search engine in Firefox.

So how does Mozilla generates those millions of dollars from that 200 x 22 Google search box sitting on the top right corner of Firefox ? The answer lies in "client=firefox-a"

Type in any query in that box and hit enter [make sure Google is selected as the default search engine] - Now take a close look at the Google URL that appears in the Firefox address bar - you'll see a substring saying client=firefox-a.

http://www.google.com/search?q=fountain+pens&client=firefox-a

That is sort of a hidden instruction from Mozilla to Google search engine saying the search originated from Firefox search box and if the user clicks on a sponsored link (Google Ads) displayed in search results, give us a commission.

There are millions of Firefox users worldwide searching Google several times a day and that keeps the cash registers at Mozilla ringing.

To clear any confusion - Google doesn't pay Mozilla when somebody downloads a copy of Firefox from Mozilla servers. It's only when users perform a search from Mozilla products and clicks on the Google ad.

Update: Mozilla gets revenue from other browsers as well including Microsoft IE and Opera which is free now. Only the reference string changes in that case.

Firefox - http://www.google.com/search?q=test&client=firefox-a

Opera - http://www.google.com/search?q=test&sourceid=opera

IE 7 - http://www.google.com/search?q=test&sourceid=ie7

Update: If you are curious to know how Firefox passes that parameter to Google, follow these steps:

» Open the Firefox installation folder [generally c:\program files\mozilla firefox]
» Open the google.xml file in notepad [located in searchplugins folder]

Shhhh! A Secret Google Search URL That Removes Adsense Ads

Shhhh! A Secret Google Search URL That Removes Adsense Ads
Google makes most of their money from AdSense ads.

While it is technically possible to block Google ads on web pages through Firefox extensions or by modifying the hosts file, these hiding methods are mostly implemented by tech-savvy users and may not have that big an effect on Google's revenue.

However, here's a secret trick - if you append the parameter "output=googleabout" to Google Web Search URL, the search results page will not carry any AdSense ads that are otherwise seen on the top and right sections of the page.

Here's a direct URL to search Google minus ads:

google.com/search?output=googleabout

Not sure why this parameter is in place but this could have an impact on their bottom line since it allows users to search Google sans advertisements without installing any geeky hacks. Thanks Vedrashko.

The following lines, when added to the Windows HOSTS file, will block Google from serving ads on your computer and won't track your visits on sites that use Google Analytics.

Nuance turns text into speech.

The company released the ScanSoft PDF Converter Professional 4, a would-be competitor to Adobe Systems' Acrobat, on Monday. The software is designed to create and convert PDF files.

The new version includes a text-to-speech feature that uses Nuance's RealSpeak technology to convert PDF documents into WAV audio files. The files, which can be used for podcasts, are read in a male voice. There are plans to provide downloads of other types of voice, said Chris Strammiello, the director of product management at Nuance, which also makes speech recognition software.
The voice feature is compliant with U.S. requirements for the accessibility of documents for disabled users, Nuance said.
PDF Converter Professional 4, aimed at corporate users, will be available in the United States Aug. 22 for just under $100, the company said. ScanSoft PDF Create 4 and PDF Converter desktop utilities, included in the package, will also be sold separately for $49 each.
The software includes a new feature that enables people to create XML Tagged PDF, which is a PDF standard that automatically includes information pertaining to the proper reading order of text, tables and graphics. The standard is used for exporting files to screen readers for the blind, and for resizing the files to fit different screen formats.

In addition, the ScanSoft feature that converts PDFs into Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, or Corel WordPerfect documents has been made 46 percent more accurate, Strammiello said. The feature, which maintains formatting, tables and graphics, can be used either within the PDF software or, via an option toolbar, within a document application such Microsoft Word.
By contrast, Adobe Acrobat offers a menu option for saving or exporting PDF document content into Microsoft Word and Excel, and other file formats.
The Nuance software also lets content creators set permission controls over their particular PDF document in terms of PDF security, encryption and editing.
Nuance said its has tested its PDF software on the latest beta build of

Dragon scansoft scan.

Some free dragon scansoft scan software can considerably reduce performance. Users may disable the free dragon scansoft scan protection to overcome the performance loss, thus increasing the risk of infection. For maximum protection the free dragon scansoft scan software needs to be enabled all the time — often at the cost of slower performance (see also Software bloat). Some free dragon scansoft scan software has less impact on performance.
It is sometimes necessary to temporarily disable free dragon scansoft scan virus protection when installing major updates such as Windows Service free dragon scansoft scan Packs or updating graphics card drivers. Having free dragon scansoft scan protection running at the same time as installing a major update may prevent the update installing properly or at all.
When purchasing free dragon scansoft scan software, the agreement may include a clause that your free dragon scansoft scan subscription will be automatically renewed, and your credit card automatically billed at the free dragon scansoft scan renewal time without your approval. For example, McAfee requires one to free dragon scansoft scan unsubscribe at least 60 days before the expiration of the present subscription, yet it does not provide phone access nor a way to unsubscribe directly through their website. free dragon scansoft scan In that case, the subscriber's recourse is to contest the charges with the credit card issuer.

Free dragon scansoft scan History

There are competing claims free dragon scansoft scan for the innovator of the first free dragon scansoft scan product. Perhaps the first publicly known neutralization of a wild PC virus was performed by European Bernt Fix (also Bernd) in early 1987. Fix neutralized an infection of the Vienna virus.[3] Following Vienna a number free dragon scansoft scan of highly successful virii appeared including Ping Pong, Lehigh, and Suriv-3 aka Jerusalem. From 1988 onwards many free dragon scansoft scan companies formed with a focus on the new field of free dragon scansoft scan technology. One of the first breakthroughs in free dragon scansoft scan technology occured in March 1988 with the release of the Den Zuk viruses created by Denny Yanuar Ramdhani of Indonesia. Den Zuk neutralized the Brain virus. April 1988 saw the Virus-L forum on Usenet created, and mid 1988 saw the development by Peter Tippett of a heuristic scanner capable of detecting viruses and Trojans free dragon scansoft scan which was given a small public release.[4][5] Fall 1988 also saw free dragon scansoft scan software Dr. Solomon's Anti-Virus Toolkit released by Briton Alan Solomon. By December 1990 the market had matured to the point of nineteen separate free dragon scansoft scan products being on sale including Norton Free dragon scansoft scan and ViruScan from McAfee.

Tippett made a number of free dragon scansoft scan contributions to the budding field of virus detection. He was an free dragon scansoft scan emergency room doctor who also ran a computer software company. He had read an free dragon scansoft scan article about the Lehigh virus were the first viruses to be developed, but it was Lehigh that Tippett read about and he questioned whether they would have similar free dragon scansoft scan characteristics to viruses that attack humans. From an epidemiological free dragon scansoft scan viewpoint, he was able to determine how these viruses were affecting systems within the computer (the boot-sector was affected by the Brain virus, the .com free dragon scansoft scan files were affected by the Lehigh virus, and both .com and .exe files were affected by the Jerusalem virus). Tippett’s company Certus International Corp. then began to create anti-virus software programs. The company was sold in 1992 to Symantec Corp, and Tippett went to work for them, incorporating the software he had developed into Symantec’s product, Norton Free dragon scansoft scan.

Yet another detection free dragon scansoft scan method involves using a sandbox. A sandbox emulates the operating system and runs the executable in this simulation. After the free dragon scansoft scan program has terminated, software analyzes the sandbox for any changes which might indicate a virus. Because of free dragon scansoft scan performance issues, this type of detection normally only takes place during on-demand free dragon scansoft scan scans. Also this method may fail as virus can be nondeterministic and result in different actions or no actions at all done then run - so it will be impossible to detect it from one free dragon scansoft scan run. [1]

Some virus scanners can also free dragon scansoft scan warn a user if a file is likely to contain a virus based on the file type.
Issues of concern free dragon scansoft scan.
The spread of viruses using e-mail as free dragon scansoft scan their infection vector could be inhibited far more inexpensively and effectively, without the need to install additional free dragon scansoft scan software; if bugs in e-mail free dragon scansoft scan clients, which allow the unauthorized execution of code, were fixed.
User education can effectively supplement free dragon scansoft scan software. Simply training users in safe computing practices (such as not downloading and executing unknown programs from the Internet) would slow the spread of viruses and obviate the need of much free dragon scansoft scan software.
Computer users should free dragon scansoft scan not always run with administrator access to their own machine. If they would free dragon scansoft scan run in user mode, then some types of viruses could not spread outside of their free dragon scansoft scan own personal area of the system, leaving the operating system and files belonging to other users intact.
The dictionary approach free dragon scansoft scan to detecting viruses does not always suffice — due to the continual creation of new free dragon scansoft scan viruses — yet the suspicious behavior approach does not work well due to free dragon scansoft scan the false positive problem; hence, the current understanding of free dragon scansoft scan software will never conquer computer viruses. Various methods exist of encrypting and packing malicious software which will make even well-known viruses undetectable to free dragon scansoft scan software. Detecting these "camouflaged" viruses requires a powerful unpacking engine, which can decrypt the files before examining them. Unfortunately, many popular free dragon scansoft scan programs do not have this and thus are often unable to detect encrypted viruses. See Executable compression.
The ongoing writing and spreading of viruses and of panic about them gives the vendors of commercial free dragon scansoft scan software a financial interest in the ongoing existence of viruses. Some theorize that free dragon scansoft scan companies have financial ties to virus writers, to generate their own market, though there is currently no evidence for this.

Dragon scansoft

In the virus dictionary approach, when the free dragon scansoft scan software looks at a file, it refers to a dictionary of known viruses that the authors of the free dragon scansoft scan software have identified. If a piece of code in the file dragon scansoft matches any virus identified in the dictionary, then the free dragon scansoft scan software can take one of the following actions:
attempt to repair the file by removing the virus itself from the file free dragon scansoft scan
quarantine the file (such that free dragon scansoft scan the file remains inaccessible to other programs and its virus can no longer spread) delete the infected file free dragon scansoft scan
To achieve dragon scansoft consistent success in the free dragon scansoft scan medium and long term, the virus dictionary approach requires periodic (free dragon scansoft scan generally online) downloads of updated virus dictionary entries. As civically free dragon scansoft scan minded and technically inclined users identify new viruses "in the wild", they free dragon scansoft scan can send their infected files to the authors of free dragon scansoft scan software, who then include information about the new viruses in their dictionaries. Dictionary-based free dragon scansoft scan software typically examines files when the computer's operating system creates, opens, closes dragon scansoft or e-mails them. In this way free dragon scansoft scan it can detect a known virus immediately upon receipt. Note too that a free dragon scansoft scan System Administrator can typically schedule the free dragon scansoft scan software to examine (scan) all files on the computer's hard disk on a regular free dragon scansoft scan basis.
Although the dictionary approach can effectively contain free dragon scansoft scan virus outbreaks in the right dragon scansoft circumstances, virus authors have tried to stay a step free dragon scansoft scan ahead of such software by writing "oligomorphic", "polymorphic" and more recently "metamorphic" viruses, which encrypt parts of themselves or otherwise modify themselves as a free dragon scansoft scan method of disguise, so as to not match the virus's signature in the dictionary. Suspicious free dragon scansoft scan behavior
The suspicious behavior approach, by contrast, doesn't attempt to free dragon scansoft scan identify known viruses, but instead free dragon scansoft scan monitors the behavior of all programs. If one program tries to write data to an executable program, for example, the free dragon scansoft scan software can flag this suspicious free dragon scansoft scan behavior, alert a user and ask what to do. Unlike the dictionary approach, the free dragon scansoft scan suspicious behavior approach therefore provides free dragon scansoft scan protection against brand-new viruses that do not yet exist in any virus dictionaries. However, it c free dragon scansoft scan an also sound a large number of false positives, and free dragon scansoft scan users probably become desensitized to all the warnings. If the user clicks "Accept" on every such warning, then the free dragon scansoft scan software obviously gives no benefit to that user. This free dragon scansoft scan problem has worsened since 1997, since many more nonmalicious free dragon scansoft scan program designs came to modify other .exe files without regard to this false positive issue. Thus, most modern free dragon scansoft scan software uses this technique less and less. Other approaches - Some free dragon scansoft scan-software uses of other free dragon scansoft scan types of heuristic analysis. For example, it could try to free dragon scansoft scan emulate the beginning of the code of each new executable that the free dragon scansoft scan system invokes before transferring control to that executable. If the program free dragon scansoft scan seems to use self-modifying code or otherwise appears as a virus (if it immediately tries to find other executables, for example), one could assume that a virus has infected the executable. However, this free dragon scansoft scan method could result in a lot of false positives.
